Each type of seafood brings its unique profile to our diet. The nice thing about seafood is its versatility because you can grill, broil, fry, or prepare in countless ways to suit every palate.

 

Health Benefits of Eating Fish

The health benefits of incorporating fish into your diet are varied. Beyond its reputation as a lean source of protein, fish is a treasure trove of essential nutrients. Let’s take a closer look at some of the key players:

When handled correctly, frozen seafood can be nearly as nutritious as fresh. Flash freezing locks in nutrients and flavor, making it a convenient option without sacrificing quality. (Note: living in the desert southwest, frozen fish is my main choice because that is the safer option.

Farm-raised seafood is a more controlled and sustainable option. And, despite what people may think, hormones are not used; antibiotics are only used when needed and given by a veterinarian. Swordfish, or marlin, is one of the higher mercury species.

While seafood boasts numerous health benefits, awareness of potential concerns is essential. One significant issue is mercury contamination, which can be harmful, especially to pregnant women and young children. Certain fish species, such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish, tend to accumulate higher levels of mercury. However, when choosing seafood, consider the risks associated with mercury against the overall health benefits of consuming fish. Opting for low-mercury varieties like salmon and sardines can minimize this concern. Pregnant women and children benefit from the consumption of seafood.
