The Six Classes of Essential Nutrients and Phytochemicals

This episode explains the six classes of essential nutrients and their role in supporting human health. Essential nutrients are those that must come from food because the body cannot make them in sufficient amounts. These include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water.

The episode walks through each nutrient class, outlining its primary functions, common food sources, and what can happen when intake is inadequate. It also explains how nutrients overlap across food groups and why removing entire food groups increases the risk of nutrient gaps.

In addition to essential nutrients, the episode introduces phytochemicals, naturally occurring compounds found in plant foods that are not classified as essential but are strongly associated with health benefits.

Understanding nutrients helps clarify why balanced dietary patterns matter and why oversimplified nutrition advice often falls short.
