Day 9: A SMART Start: Crafting Goals for a Successful New Year
Day 9: A SMART Start: Crafting Goals for a Successful New Year
As we stand on the cusp of a new year (TWO WEEKS!), the tradition of setting goals comes into focus. However, this time, it means creating goals that are not only meant for you but also SMART – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-Bound. I know this is a tired topic this time of year, but I still do it. These are not resolutions but things I will achieve in the coming year (like reading 23 or more books in 2023). So, let’s set intentions that genuinely resonate for you and are doable.
The Goal Dilemma:
The enthusiasm of a new year often leads us to set ambitious goals fueled by the desire for positive change. Yet, it's crucial to balance aspiration and practicality. Enter SMART goals – a framework designed to bring intentionality and feasibility to our goal.
The SMART Approach:
Again, you probably know this, but let’s review the SMART approach. This is how it can help; for example, “I will read at least 24 books in 2024.” Does this fit the SMART criteria?
Specific: Define your goal with clarity. Instead of a broad goal like "exercise more," opt for a specific target such as "walk 30 minutes daily."
Measurable: Establish criteria to measure your progress. If your goal involves a habit change, quantify it. For instance, "read two books a month" or "drink eight glasses of water daily."
Achievable: Ensure your goal is attainable within your current circumstances. Set realistic milestones that align with your capabilities and resources. To suggest that you will reach your high-school weight when you are planning your 30-year reunion… that leads to the next part of the SMART acronym,
Realistic: Assess the feasibility of your goal. Consider your daily commitments, potential obstacles, and the sustainability of the change you're aiming for.
Time-Bound: Introduce a timeline for your goal. Assign deadlines to specific milestones, creating a sense of urgency and structure. For instance, "lose 5 pounds by the end of March."
So, this works: “I will read at least 24 books in 2024.” With 12 months in the year, this is just two books per month. I like to read. I am part of a monthly book club and am 100% sure this is realistic and achievable. This may not be your goal, but you get the idea.
Making Goals That You Can Stick To:
Prioritize: Identify the areas of your life that hold the most significance. Focus on goals aligning with your values and contributing to your wellness.
Start Small: Begin with manageable changes. Small victories build confidence and create a foundation for larger transformations over time.
Build Habits: Frame your goals as habits to cultivate rather than tasks to accomplish. Consistency is key in establishing lasting change.
Seek Support: Share your goals with friends or family. Having a support system can provide encouragement, accountability, and shared celebrations.
Reflect and Adjust: Regularly assess your progress. Adjust your goals based on what's working and what requires modification if needed. Adaptability enhances the likelihood of success.
Embrace the Journey:
As we head into the new year, make wellness (and other life) goals you can and will do! By adopting the SMART approach and incorporating thoughtful strategies, we set the stage for a year of growth, fulfillment, and achievable success.
