“Detoxing” From Sugar and the Truth About Sugar Addiction
Claims about “sugar detoxes” and sugar addiction are common in online nutrition conversations. This episode examines those claims through a clinical and scientific lens.
Addiction, formally defined as substance use disorder, has specific diagnostic criteria that include compulsive use despite harmful consequences, tolerance, withdrawal, and significant impairment in daily functioning. Sugar addiction is not a recognized diagnosis in the DSM 5.
The discussion explores how carbohydrates function in the body, why glucose is essential for brain metabolism, and what research actually shows about sugar and the brain’s reward pathways. While palatable foods activate dopamine responses, so do many non harmful and necessary human experiences.
The concept of detox is also clarified. Sugar is not a toxin, and the body’s liver and kidneys already manage detoxification without the need for restrictive cleanses.
The episode also addresses how rigid food restriction can increase cravings and preoccupation with food. Practical, balanced approaches to reducing added sugar are discussed without promoting elimination or fear-based messaging.
This episode is part of a broader series examining carbohydrates and common misconceptions about them.
