When Diets Go Sideways: Keto, Carnivore, and Other Diet Trends

Popular diet trends do not always have the purpose many people assume. Some dietary approaches that are now promoted for weight loss or general wellness were originally developed for medical treatment, short-term diagnosis, or temporary experimentation.

This episode explores how dietary approaches can drift from their original purpose. The ketogenic diet was developed as a medical therapy for seizure management, while elimination diets are used as temporary diagnostic tools to identify potential food triggers. Whole30 was designed as a short-term elimination and reintroduction program, while the carnivore diet is a more recent trend with limited long-term research.

The discussion also examines how social media can simplify complex nutrition topics into messages such as "eat this," "don't eat that," or "remove one food group and solve the problem." When dietary approaches become identities, it becomes harder to evaluate whether they still serve their intended purpose.

Knowing where a diet came from doesn't automatically determine whether it is appropriate. Nutritional adequacy, sustainability, evidence, lifestyle fit, and individual health goals are also important considerations when evaluating any eating pattern.
