Not Every Diet Is About Weight Loss: Therapeutic Diets Explained

Not every diet is designed for weight loss. Therapeutic diets are used in healthcare to manage medical conditions, reduce symptoms, prevent complications, and support overall treatment.

This episode explores several common therapeutic eating patterns, including gluten-free diets for celiac disease, heart-healthy eating patterns, nutrition for diabetes, renal diets, low-FODMAP approaches for gastrointestinal symptoms, low-sodium diets, and other specialized dietary interventions.

The discussion also introduces Medical Nutrition Therapy, an individualized, evidence-based approach to nutrition care provided by registered dietitians. Unlike commercial diets that often focus on rapid weight loss, therapeutic diets are designed around a person's medical needs. The appropriate approach may depend on the condition, medications, laboratory values, symptoms, nutritional needs, preferences, and other health factors.

Understanding a diet’s purpose matters. A gluten-free diet for celiac disease, a low-FODMAP approach for IBS, and a heart-healthy eating pattern all have different goals, even though they may all be called "diets."

Therapeutic diets can also overlap because people often have more than one health condition.

The episode provides context for understanding when dietary changes are part of medical treatment and sets up the next discussion: finding an eating pattern that works in everyday life.
