Decoding Food Ingredients: What’s Really in Your Food?
Food labels can be confusing—and sometimes alarming. This episode of the Real World Nutrition podcast unpacks what’s really behind the ingredient lists on packaged foods. From BHA to Blue 1, and from carrageenan to “natural flavors,” it’s not always easy to tell which ingredients are added for safety, preservation, or just marketing purposes.
In the U.S., food manufacturers are required to list ingredients in descending order by weight. Many additives, whether artificial or naturally derived, serve specific functions. Learn how categories like preservatives, flavor enhancers, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and colorings work, and what the FDA requires when it comes to food safety.
The episode also explains the concept of GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) and why not all additives are automatically dangerous just because they’re hard to pronounce. Plus, a look at how ingredient regulations differ between the U.S. and the European Union, and why that comparison often lacks full context.
This conversation ties directly into the recent blog post on U.S. vs EU food standards, making it easier to understand where food policy overlaps—and where it doesn’t.
